Fish Out of Water

Displacement and isolation are perfect themes for writing. We’ve all felt it. Some of feel it regularly, the idea of being “a fish out of water”. Focus on use of specific, physical sensations and details. Use taste, touch, smell. Don’t hold back. Let it become funny, or scary, weird and disturbing. Exaggerate, but keep it emotionally true. Avoid sentimentality. Add a bit of dialogue, but make the dialogue work hard for the story. Less is more. Don’t worry about your characters being nice.
